The cardboard box is actually super OP and I'd argue MGSV is the game where it's the most powerful, but it's not something that initial players will immediately understand since it requires some set-up and a bit of experimentation. In MGS1 it's more niche, I think you need to use the box in the area that's in the item description. I remember using them in another areas, and guards would come investigate and I'd get spotted. They would either pick it up or kick it. You can also use the box to transport yourself to its area if you get in the back of a truck.
